The Local Arrangements Committee for the Region 1 NAFSA conference is pleased to invite you to “Capitolize” on the Tides of Change in Olympia - Washington’s funky capital city - from October 27 – 30, 2004 for the annual fall conference.

Welcome to Olympia, the city dubbed ‘hippest town in the west’ by Time magazine!  Situated at the southern tip of the Puget Sound, this small town (with a lot of attitude) is the perfect mix of hometown friendliness, natural beauty and cosmopolitan kitsch.  From coffee shops to movie theaters to music, Oly is home to all things independent.

Our hometown is known for the eclectic assortment of restaurants, shops and clubs that make up its downtown core.  Olympia celebrates the diversity of its citizens and our world.  These qualities make Olympia a great place to talk about supporting diversity in education through international students and programs.  We hope you’ll enjoy exploring our community and all it has to offer.

Start out at the historic Spar Bar for one of their famous breakfasts.  Stroll down 4th Avenue and find that perfect ‘something to read while I’m at the conference’ at Orca Books.  Head up to 5th Avenue for a cup of tea at The Tea Lady or, if coffee is your passion, sample the best at Batdorf and Bronson.  Awaken your inner child at Wind Up Here toy store.  Walk towards the water and along the marina.  Follow the melody to the Farmer’s Market and listen as a local musician punctuates his strumming with political commentary (well, you are in Olympia after all).  Yep, there’s a little something for everyone in this very independent city.

We look forward to seeing you in October!
